Speech Language Pathologist

This position is in the Audiology & Speech Pathology-Language section of the Geriatrics, Rehabilitation and Extended Care Services at the Spokane Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center. The speech-language pathologist must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of speech-language pathology to a wide range of populations. The incumbent is an independent licensed practitioner and is at the full performance level. Responsibilities:
Independent diagnostic assessment and evaluation of cases that are referred to Speech-Language Pathology without limitation as to difficulty or complexity. Conduct interviews with the patient and appropriate family members and/or friends, as well as select, administer and interpret the diagnostic test necessary to detect and evaluate any type of speech, language, voice, fluency, cognitive, and/or swallowing disorder. Ensure adequacy of assessment report findings to other professional workers with whom he/she or other members of the speech-language pathology service may cooperate in formulating diagnostic and clinical judgments. Utilize all diagnostic and evaluative procedures and techniques consistent with contemporary speech-language pathology practice. Plan, conduct, coordinate, and monitor the effectiveness and clinical outcomes of patient-centered treatment and rehabilitative services to maximize and restore (to the greatest extent possible) physical and social functioning. Administer of a full range of tests of speech, language, voice, fluency, and cognition. The Speech-Language Pathologist has knowledge of principles and techniques used in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, cognitive-communication voice disorders. The Speech-Language Pathologist is aware of principles and techniques used in voice disorders including alaryngeal and trach/ventilator-dependent patients to perform functions associated with contemporary speech-language pathology scope of practice. Responsibilities:
Remain current with new developments in speech-language pathology and maintain professional competency by reading professional journals and engage in continuing education activities and professional learning experiences by communicating with others in the profession and related professions. Orient patients, medical residents, allied health professionals, community organizations, students and volunteers to the purpose and function of speech pathology. Provide in-services to nursing personnel, medical residents, and other allied health professionals on specific occupational therapy evaluation and treatment procedures. Assist in orientation and training of new staff. Provide patient and family education relating to each patient's functional strengths and weaknesses in areas of cognitive, speech, voice, communication & swallowing abilities. Responsibilities:
Attend regular staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meetings as appropriate. Review policies and procedures and attend in-service trainings. Perform ancillary assignments including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of the work is not substantial. Actively participate in developing guidelines and protocols, new patient programs, and evaluate existing programs. Assist the Chief of the Audiology and Speech Pathology section maintain proper inventory stock levels and ensure equipment is available for patient treatment. Ensure patient appointments made in the computer are checked out and encounter information is completed for all patients in a timely manner. Track and turn in monthly statistics relating to patient visits and workload as requested by the Chief of the Audiology and Speech Pathology. Follow all applicable laws, regulations and policies regarding confidentiality, computer security and software licensing and protect hardware, software and all sensitive information (both on screen and computer printouts). Participate in research activities pertinent to speech-language pathology. Although limited research may be conducted in the clinical setting, the use of carefully executed procedures may be a part of a research design. Work Schedule:

1. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) 2. Education. A master's degree or its equivalent in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, or a directly related field from an accredited college or university. Accredited means a college or university recognized by a regional accreditation organization and a speech-language pathology academic program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). 3. Licensure. For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. The S-LP must maintain full, current, and unrestricted licensure/registration. 4. English Language Proficiency. Speech-language pathologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). GS-12. 1. Licensure. The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. 2. Education and Experience. Completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice speech-language pathology. 3. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Staff S-LPs at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of speech-language pathology to a wide range of populations. The following KSAs are required:
(a) Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies. (b) Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures sufficient to perform clinical services independently. (c) Ability to conduct assessments, provide treatment interventions, and provide consultation to other health care professionals. (d) Knowledge of instrumentation used in speech-language pathology. (e) Knowledge of principles and techniques used in alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, and cognitive-communication disorders. (f) Knowledge of principles and techniques used in voice disorders including alaryngeal and trach/ventilator-dependent patients. (g) Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary speech-language pathology practice. References:

Work is performed in a clinic setting. Light lifting, carrying items (under 15 pounds) and the ability to distinguish basic colors is required. The work requires the ability to use a keyboard to access a computer. The incumbent works closely with patients and staff in a clinic setting.
