Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (Info)

Manages network equipment including but not limited to network switches, servers, routers and related infrastructure for any and all networked complex medical devices and systems such as imaging, life support, dialysis, and monitoring. Troubleshoots and maintains complete systems of computerized networks, databases and servers including but not limited to biomedical information systems that store or facilitate patient information. Works with IT and Cerner to ensure open network on specified port from gateway to CareAware iBus. Drives parameter testing efforts and assists with planning of integration testing, coordinate unit, system and integration testing events with all project teams and escalate issues to Project manager. Maintain networking, medical device configurations and CCE configurations required for BMDI solutions. Supports iBus device configurations and EHR interface configuration. Maintains a library of electronic reference materials for use in answering user questions and resolving first call problems and routes end user service requests that cannot be addressed first call to Cerner Help Desk. Provides technical support for gateway connectivity, CCE and terminal servers as well as engine and fully redundant CareAware iBus windows updates. Maintains Networked Medical Device Database or other central database that stores inventory listings and technical attributes (such as OS, AV, VLAN, IP address etc) for all medical devices that connect to the VA network in order to meet Medical Device Cybersecurity KPI metrics (such as but not limited to NMDD VLAN compliance, NMDD Device Compliance and NMDD Device Conformance). Maintains Medical Device Security measures such as remediate monthly vulnerabilities report and remediation of medical devices with unsupported Windows OS. Implements and plans for new and emerging technologies including but not limited to diagnostic modalities, network management and storage, and virtual data centers. Designs, implements and manages network incident response due to infection, loss of service or regional and local policy changes according to VA guidelines. Ensures proper security configuration for assigned devices and networks. Regularly reviews and installs available approved software updates and virus definitions for applicable networked medical devices. Leads development of disaster recovery procedures for critical systems to be enacted in the event of device failure. Adheres to MDIA Guidelines in both pre-procurement and during system implementation. Loads operating system (OS) and clinical application software as needed. Implements and plans for new and emerging technologies including but not limited to diagnostic modalities, network management and storage, and virtual data centers. Manages network incident response due to infection, loss of service or regional and local policy changes according to VA guidelines. Leads development of disaster recovery procedures for critical systems to be enacted in the event of device failure. Maintains functional knowledge of relevant safety codes and standards of regulatory bodies including but not limited to The Joint Commission (TJC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), American College of Radiology (ACR), Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS). Documents all work performed in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). This documentation is completed in accordance with regulatory body requirements, Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) Documentation of Services guidelines and other organizational requirements. Investigates, remediates and documents recalls and safety alerts within established time-frames. Represents Biomedical/Clinical Engineering department on committees and in meetings as delegated by supervisor. Work Schedule:

Associates degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology or Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related technical field such as Electronic Technology or Information Technology AND two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer, or Information Technology Specialist. OR, Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related field such as Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) or Information Technology. OR, Completion of a military training program in biomedical equipment AND two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist or Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer or Information Technology Specialist. Grandfathering Provision:
All persons employed in VHA as a BESS on the effective date of this qualification standard (February 7, 2018) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education that is part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it the following provisions apply:
1) Such employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. 2) BESS's who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. 3) Bess initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education that meet all the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation. 4) Employees who are retained as a BESS under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry as a BESS. Experience:
At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSA's:
Current knowledge of computer virus protection software, available software patches and upgrades, and information security tools. Expert knowledge of electronics, computer and networking theory with experience maintaining, interfacing and troubleshooting networked medical equipment to include VLAN configuration, IP addressing, sub-netting, and network security. Ability to utilize and maintain computer and server based medical equipment, medical record databases, and proprietary and generic software, Experience with TCP/IP, HL7, networking, network security, and DICOM standards. Ability to interpret, identify, and apply network engineering principles and practices where there often times is no previous example to follow, or precedence. Skill to distinguish networking problems from non-networking problems and discuss various options with IT networking and operations staff members. Preferred

Incumbent must be able to stoop, reach, kneel, crouch, and maintain intense concentration for long periods of time under most adverse conditions, such as repairing and/or calibrating lifesaving equipment while it is monitoring and/or supporting the life of a patient. Acceptable hearing, visual accuracy, field of vision, and color perception are required for working on minute circuits. Moderate lifting is necessary. Heavy lifting (over 40 lbs) can be accomplished by getting assistance when needed. Circuit repairs require adequate eyesight and dexterity for working on high-density boards.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
